Ocean Thunder

a call to arms
in the crash cascades
through the salty air
and among the moving clouds,
streaking across the horizon sky

the siren song
of night
drawing us to sharp moonlight
that dances across the dark ripples,
that pastes our shadow to the cool sand

this music is endless,
sacred like a Gregorian chant
with never the same note

cleansing despite the sand everywhere,
a dream-forging cauldron of strength

a roiling punch
to knock us down
when we need it

Nightlight Over Long Beach Island

our devices
glow like fireflies
and the night sky
pays no mind
it steers the ocean
to pound these shores
not knowing we’re alive

there is no magic formula
waiting to be revealed
no untapped powers
to absorb
only beauty
to let all heal

the secret
is to enjoy this sight,
to let this glory
be your light

so stop searching
for your soul to feed
this truth through beauty
is all you need

Long Beach Island

sun-brown men
jest from baking rooftops,
women with salt-touched caves
wander the sweaty streets

houses larger than dreams
reach soft powder beaches
and ocean, infinite ocean
—in a straight line,
you’ll reach Portugal

tanned sentries
guard the sands,
eye dolphins in the distance

from the crossed hustle
to the mocking ghost town
after season
the waves roar
their clarion call
to giant dreams
and stars make new friends
with a knowing wink
