The Stalking Moon

the heavenly body of record
lest you forget
crushes petty complaint
beneath its rocky seas
and pulls the tides
to cool work-weary feet

the stalking moon
sees you home
knowing twinkle in the sky

it lets you know
in the worst of sorrow
that there is still
another tomorrow

Ocean Thunder

a call to arms
in the crash cascades
through the salty air
and among the moving clouds,
streaking across the horizon sky

the siren song
of night
drawing us to sharp moonlight
that dances across the dark ripples,
that pastes our shadow to the cool sand

this music is endless,
sacred like a Gregorian chant
with never the same note

cleansing despite the sand everywhere,
a dream-forging cauldron of strength

a roiling punch
to knock us down
when we need it

First Spring Day of Winter

flush-faced
in a winter coat
awkwardly cloaked
among the joyful strollers

ready for the rains,
the torrent streams
to build again
and make green

calendars and numbers
tell stale tales
while the sky
maps a better afternoon

dreaming in real time
of new, verdant days
ahead

The Truth of First Light

the pull of sleep
loses its hold
when the dawn
first light offers
to burn off the cold

the sweet dew chill
little sought
but for the take
a just reward
for being awake

catching the sky
blue for the right eyes
to set our hopeful gaze
and have adventure
before the heated haze

like the hunter
who sacrificed the night
this is the moment
arrived with first light

A Cold Forest Lament

the woods play tricks
and leave the weary
to walk home aching,
tiring with each step,
mired in a vulture’s quiet

boundary and man breaker,
jester and solemn teacher,
the land reflects
the mind of the hunter:
sometimes mad,
but always hungry

Nightlight Over Long Beach Island

our devices
glow like fireflies
and the night sky
pays no mind
it steers the ocean
to pound these shores
not knowing we’re alive

there is no magic formula
waiting to be revealed
no untapped powers
to absorb
only beauty
to let all heal

the secret
is to enjoy this sight,
to let this glory
be your light

so stop searching
for your soul to feed
this truth through beauty
is all you need

Mud Soup

churning churlish
under canopy of trees
at the quiet park
summer streets simmer
while temptint rain

the only Dad here
hiding under a sweaty hat
trying not to gawk
at the fit mom
breastfeeding

and the cool dirt
speaks to me
when the girls pile it
to build their castle

we endure all shapes
of absurdities
to give our blood kin
an edge,
grateful we no longer
have to kill for it

the girls
make their quiet father
mud soup
I pretend to sip it
—delicious—
as I wait
to unleash their ambition
upon the world

First Bite of Spring

The first bite of Spring
is the cool chill
that doesn’t sting,
is spying the last piece
of melting snow
with a smile and a wink.

The first bite of Spring
is to smell the coming bloom,
to see that slight blur
of color that promises
to unfurl.

To drink in the Spring
is to tread that dangerous place,
and yearn to soak it all in
before it burns our face.

Rocky Neck

art plied honestly
in sweat and heat
hard wrought
beside the sun-kissed lobstermen
waving gracefully
to rough locals
and soft tourists

where joyous newlyweds
sketch their own future
panel by panel

muck deep
in tiny horseshoe crabs
scrambling in low tide pools
away from baby girls

where dogs swim
beside the private beaches
and the rich sands
are slick
with stubborn seaweed carpets

let’s be worthy of this place,
may we have the good sense
to live lives
as beautiful as this

Breeze Damage

much more trouble
than tussled hair
or the dust void
on the floor
from what’s missing there

an uprooted mudline
is this purgatory’s border
a ruined life’s chaos
keeps its own
kind of order

there’s no engineer
to blame,
no liable claim
moneyed salvation
is the flip side of nature,
and a zero-sum game

those forces that
greened the grass
and churned the sea
gladly unglued it all
for you and me

we’ll watch it
powerlessly
and let it be

Camden, Maine

quilted sky
glittering silently,
winking a thousand times
to the iron visitors

constellation
of houses
are sentries
to the cooing loons
and grunting bullfrogs

by day
the sun-kissed bodies
drift by
in casual boats,
soaking in the trees
and the sea-salt air

harbor chatter
in vacation tongue,
tolerant locals
measure patience
one tourist at a time

Call of the Woods

leaf-lush primal joy,
a magnet,
drawing woodmen
from their galley desks
step
by wide-eyed
step

forest bound
and snug,
wound tight
but natural
in tree cloak

all still
in the magic
of the first light
the world
as we were meant
to see it—
waking, alive,
and ripe
for the taking

Rattlesnake Mountain

Carved
Like paradise
From alabaster glaciers
Birth trees like
Like stubborn soldiers
Raising the bright fall canopy
            To heroic skies

Hunting for moose tracks
Among the pine needle carpets
Climb and sweat
In the fall breeze

Slough up rocky slopes
Jagged hills with slip-leaves
Just for us tourists

Serene clearing
To spy Crescent Lake
And miles of trees and skies

Not another soul around to share
The treasured stones, the good musty Earth
The dreamy majesty of land
Of the America that still is, at least here.

Deerwoods

Silent inviting
a place of bounty
fleeting, springing
with creatures alighting

puzzles of trees
branches and streams
woods of Indian walking dreams

pace in the cold
upwind and still;
waiting for prey
ignoring the chill

there to take
with a hunter’s violence,
a thirst to slake
with hours of silence

Call of the Woodsmen

Leaf-lush
primal joy,
a magnet
drawing woodsmen
step by wide-eyed step.

Forrest bound
and snug,
wound tight
but somehow natural
in tree-cloaked garb.

and still
in the magic
of the first light
the world
as we were meant to see it:
waking,
alive
without the glare
of a cruel sun,
autumnal
and ripe for the taking.
