Buc-ee’s at 3 a.m.

We relent
to the lure of adventures
under blue night sky,
indulge
in the gluttony
of a pre-dawn brisket sandwich

and stay loyal to this,
our tired-wired spontaneous
highway survival pact

communing
with the fellow travelers here:
awake,
embracing the world of flesh and fluorescent lights,
soaking in
this brief comfort,
respite
from the cruel asphalt
and nonstop drive

outside,
standing on stained pavement,
pontificating in
half-lucid lateness chatter
before the pagan idol
of a bronze beaver,

we dine like kings
and feel alive.

Snowman

Stone cold proof
for the need of creation,
silent sentinel
of something sacred,
birthed by clumsy young hands.

Rising triumphant,
totem of the season’s mischief,
destined to melt
into the blooming Spring.

Made human
with patchwork features,
almonds and bruised carrot end face,
soggy stick limbs claim victory
over freeze anonymity.

Never again another snow pile
but a life,
fleeting like ours,
destined for the storm drain
or brown grass,
and leaving us with its joy.

December Night in New York

Still glows
with blue-black embers
smolders its whiplash twilight

sidewalks are a slush minefield
poorly navigated
in the chaos of the
unofficial winter night

the glow of joy is all around—
some plastic,
some triumphant hubris,
and we forge our own
North Stars
and assemble them
for decorations

we journey
through these throngs
like wise men
we will never be,
to welcome the birth
of unseen miracles
in our sparkling city

Snow Language

The salt spackle splatter
of plow truck dialect

marks our caravan,
frost-hardened
from the industrial grime
of the cold

this underworld of harsh
allows our cozy fireplaces,
our gingerbread

the cruel season
also powers the firebrand sunset,
gives rest and time for comfort,
readies the earth for blooming

but first

delivers the pain
to make us stronger
with the sting of chapped skin
and brown dim
of night-sky afternoons

let this freeze
press us into its service
as we rush headlong into our winters
grinding through hard truths
and ready for Spring.

The Stalking Moon

the heavenly body of record
lest you forget
crushes petty complaint
beneath its rocky seas
and pulls the tides
to cool work-weary feet

the stalking moon
sees you home
knowing twinkle in the sky

it lets you know
in the worst of sorrow
that there is still
another tomorrow

Times Square At Night

good in small doses;
a rose
to decades gone,
everywhere still a hustle
but now more staged
than uncaged

pastel pixels
light the stage
where a thousand characters
ply their trade
as police horses
clack past

a pause
to be a tourist
in our own city,
to bask in the false light
and gawk at the nightlife

we snap a photo,
a million souls
anonymous, yet immortalized
in an instant

King Monster Undercover

freedom
is being alive
like mental fluoride

bold and sharp
quiet
like a razor rock

action remedy
secret medicine
the balm of the doing
saving souls
one day at a time

let it burn on
infinitely
in flesh and poetry

Rockville, Maryland

This night
is too still
even for a corporate park,
squat hotel
among slapped-together homes

The ground
holds secrets
of times past,
musket balls and tomahawks,
relics
of pioneers and war.

Brick facsimile
stands sentry now,
faux elegance
tacked on to a green Earth
screaming to be free.

The Sinequa ghosts
shake their bloody heads
at our lives,
ticked away in board rooms
with catered lunches
eyes glazed
simple slaves
to numbers on a screen.

Regal powers of the living room floor

my throne
is cereal-strewn carpet
my subjects
are building blocks
for a supersandwich
piled giggling
upon one another
after saving our world

I reign
in final judgement
of sharing
while minding the choking hazards

I am Dragon King
and riding workhorse
conquering fear,
hauling my sacred blood kin
for tickles and napping

this brood makes me stronger
though I drag my feet
and fall asleep
before my appointed hour

Fairy Lights of Flushing

a holiday every day
this corner of our Gotham
we pray it to stay
unhip
a little longer

where the news
is churned by machine
and stacked wet on trucks
to stain fingers
and shape minds

where motorcycles hide
stacked between trailers
and a cacophony of cars
the salty perfume of the bay
filled with planes and prisoners

and left behind
to bode adventure
is the lonely highway side
far from the tudor homes
the chaos Korean 2 a.m. barbecue

living in the sweet rush
of passing cars
everyone hurtling

toward some odd piece
of their dreams

First Spring Day of Winter

flush-faced
in a winter coat
awkwardly cloaked
among the joyful strollers

ready for the rains,
the torrent streams
to build again
and make green

calendars and numbers
tell stale tales
while the sky
maps a better afternoon

dreaming in real time
of new, verdant days
ahead

Hell’s Kitchen Express

bring us West
where hard blossoms grow
where moss
knows how to map the bodies
in old brick

bring us West
where pink sky fire
chases us
down paving stone streets

where a chosen few
are wise enough
to seek their peace

bring us West
where outlaw ghosts
still prowl,
where dreamers still stoop
to pick up change
and share a bottle
with strangers

Weary Bleary Fog-Eyed Burn

at some point
we betray ourselves
at work

the way our eyes
glaze over
at meetings
or how the inner fire
shines through
when talk turns
to the outside world

pleased and relieved
to be the outliers,
the tired dogs
that can do the harder work
without pretending

cloaked
in solitude
to dream
of better things

Day Adventuring

day adventuring
is driving, moving
to keep moving,
staring at rusted rebar
prodding wrought fingers
out of New Deal concrete
kissed by aquamarine

it is
reigning
over dead end streets
or quiet parks
where ducks wade
out of reach,
feeding sun-touched turtles
for their boldness

adventure is somehow
snatching solitude
like urchins steal bread
and pray
to the hedonist war gods
that we do not hang for it all

Early Fireworks

spied over
illicit rooftop visit
shining for miles
blasting holy glitter
on cloudy night
and muddy waters

glowing from the bridges
and the old towers
these mercantile dreams
made real with gunpowder
centuries still

Let this magic
never fade
from our red-blooded veins;
let us always retain
this rough-trade explosive crazy
that somehow,
against all odds
keeps us free.

The Truth of First Light

the pull of sleep
loses its hold
when the dawn
first light offers
to burn off the cold

the sweet dew chill
little sought
but for the take
a just reward
for being awake

catching the sky
blue for the right eyes
to set our hopeful gaze
and have adventure
before the heated haze

like the hunter
who sacrificed the night
this is the moment
arrived with first light

A Cold Forest Lament

the woods play tricks
and leave the weary
to walk home aching,
tiring with each step,
mired in a vulture’s quiet

boundary and man breaker,
jester and solemn teacher,
the land reflects
the mind of the hunter:
sometimes mad,
but always hungry

Shadow Zen of the Misfit Drones

better to stay a secret
in our own universe
riding hobo rails
or trout fishing across time
dodging train yard cops
and Kodiak bears

being free to fail
or be devoured
in the wild
or overdose
on lollygagging poetry
and ecumenical oddity

such a better end
than succumb
to those
landlocked sharks
that chew away our time
branded
in sterile horror

we’ll show them our masks
—a wink and a nod—

and turn back to the real work
of salvaging our own souls

Victory of the Walkabout Tribe

A time to gaze
To let the mind graze
Walk to an anthem
Heard only by you
To watch dreams being dreamed
And to dream your own too

With future rejoicings
Overheard from within
The Walkabout Tribe
Will make you their kin
Through flush summer heat
Or steel-winter cold
These starry-eyed dreamers
Shall never grow old

How to Keep Time

like a starter pistol
shot up close
breakneck lessons
at the speed
of bumpy hayrides
pumpkin patch
rollicking
in fast-jostle motion

counted
with giggles
and stolen snapshots
one day at a time
up to bedtime
in joyous bedlam
reeling

pulling in memories
like a fighting ocean fish
gorging souls
in a cosmic fish fry
to the light
of fireflies
as children laugh
out in the dusky light
