A Climbing Rock

A father’s job
is a climbing rock
to be that rough path
that winds to the top

to rule with love
to tempt the fates
to put muscle on bones
and food on plates

hewn from
ancient tectonic madness
to guide through scrapes
and be a salve for sadness

unending
unbending and deep
to protect, defend
and lull to sleep

First Bite of Spring

The first bite of Spring
is the cool chill
that doesn’t sting,
is spying the last piece
of melting snow
with a smile and a wink.

The first bite of Spring
is to smell the coming bloom,
to see that slight blur
of color that promises
to unfurl.

To drink in the Spring
is to tread that dangerous place,
and yearn to soak it all in
before it burns our face.

News of the World

Fireworks crack wise
over Southern skies
the Georgia pine stay silent
as the New Year
promises to conquer fear
with a birth
in a burst of violence.

The chill night sky
makes us sweet promises
of dark ventures
if we only take them.
The blue night commands
that we not follow legends
but make them.

Spread the news:
We’re barreling through,
upsetting pretenders
and electrifying
you.

Deerwoods

Silent inviting
a place of bounty
fleeting, springing
with creatures alighting

puzzles of trees
branches and streams
woods of Indian walking dreams

pace in the cold
upwind and still;
waiting for prey
ignoring the chill

there to take
with a hunter’s violence,
a thirst to slake
with hours of silence
