By the Guiding Light of the Ozone Sky

on a city street
like a secret rendezvous
the velvet sky
calls to us,
its glow
as its calling card
and victory sign
for us alone

we will overcome
profane existence
and be that speed healer,
the secrecy dealer, soldier
and saver of savaged souls,
the harbinger of doom
for doubt,
assassin
of false virtue
and all else
that poisons dreams

we pledge
before this dawn sky
to be life’s avenger,
the reckoning to come,
to redeem the mad nomads
and beaten down dreamers
forever

All Night Driving

Smooth blacktop sailing
before light
cracks the horizon line,

soaring
like a swift boat captain
searching for ivory
or Vietcong
dreams of lobster rolls
and keeping children asleep

no time to stop
or think, or weep.

One week
without work stress
our steady paycheck souldeath.
Scrambling to get there
before commuters clog
the highway arteries.

Loving the brakespeed chaos
and the promise of coffee
and salty air
with leadfoot magic
to get us there.

Call of the Woodsmen

Leaf-lush
primal joy,
a magnet
drawing woodsmen
step by wide-eyed step.

Forrest bound
and snug,
wound tight
but somehow natural
in tree-cloaked garb.

and still
in the magic
of the first light
the world
as we were meant to see it:
waking,
alive
without the glare
of a cruel sun,
autumnal
and ripe for the taking.
